Book Title: Expressly Yours, Samantha (American historical)

Log Line: The Pony Express creates the backdrop for a great love story.

Book Tag Line: A girl on the run who decides to pose as a boy, and a young man who loves to ride horses meet as the Pony Express is about to start. Both are part of history, and have been destined to come into contact with each other.

Book Blurb: Samantha Hughes has one day to escape from her wicked uncle, and a sign in the post office is her answer. She’ll cut her hair to pose as a man and become Sam Hughes, a Pony Express rider.
Valerian Fitzpatrick doesn’t want the weight of responsibility that his brothers have in the family business. Fortunately, the Pony Express offers a chance to make his own way in the world.
He assumes his new buddy, Sam, is on the run from the law, until she’s hit by a stray gunshot and he has to undress her to staunch the wound. Friendship quickly turns to attraction—and more—but when Sam’s uncle tracks her down, she is forced to run yet again.
Val’s determined to find her, but will a future with Sam mean giving up the freedom he’s always craved?

Book Excerpt:

A sign at the post office caught Samantha’s eye. She feigned disinterest as she snuck sidelong glances at the poster about the new Pony Express, reading one line at a time.
Wanted: Young, skinny, wiry fellows.
She tore her glance from the sign and studied the customers queued up in front of her. Another quick look.
Not over eighteen.
She posted her letter and turned away from the window, catching the last of the poster’s message.
Must be expert riders. Willing to face death daily. Orphans preferred.
She was all of what they wanted, except for one basic and glaring fact. She might be young, skinny, and wiry, but she was no fellow. Samantha calmed her breathing as she walked away from the post office, but her mind was buzzing with possibilities. Her ticket out of the nightmare her life had become had just presented itself. She loved horses and had a good hand with them. All she needed to do was to hide her true identity—pretend to be a boy—and she was certain she could pull it off. Uncle Jack had enough money to keep him busy until after midnight. Samantha figured she had at least twelve hours to transform herself and get on the road.

  1. Well this is embarassing because I can't Remember when I've been to one outside my state! Although I have been to Manueal Antonio National Park in Costa Rica and saw indigenous animals and flora like the sloth, monkeys and fantastic trees and flowers. We also have a wonderful national park right here in Hobe Sound called the Jonathan Dickensen Park and we've had many splendid lazy days kyaking along the river, watching the birds and ocassional deer. Good times!

  2. Thank you, Celia, for inviting me here today. When I was doing the research for Expressly Yours, Samantha, I took a road trip along the pioneer trail that led west. Such a fun trip and I learned a lot about the geography of the country. I'd love to do it again. I'm all about road trips.

  3. I walk through Independence Mall and Washington Square Park almost every day. Often, I'll look at a bench and wonder what our founding fathers discussed while sitting in that very spot!

  4. My pleasure Becky! This is fun.

And angela, are you speaking of my birthright the one, the only city in the US that has preserved the larged square block Colonial construction in the US? I LOVE PHILADELPHIA any chance we get we travel there and if the budget allows stay right in Olde City at 3rd and Chestnut Historical Best Western where you can make yourself a fresh waffle in the AM shaped in the form of the Liberty Bell. Tons of Natonal Landmarks and I for one love Ben Franklin so much one of my two pen names is taken after his surname! So much wonderful Early American history I'd encourage anyone to visit!
